Frequently Asked Questions about MonaLisa Touch:

What is the MonaLisa Touch?

The MonaLisa Touch is a gentle laser therapy that delivers controlled energy to the vaginal wall tissue. It restores vaginal health by generating new collagen, elastin and vascularization. The MonaLisa Touch was first available outside the US where thousands of patients have been treated worldwide.

How Does it Work?

The MonaLisa Touch uses gentle laser energy with a probe that is inserted into the vaginal canal. A two-part pulse targets surface tissue and deep tissue to promote vaginal mucosal revitalization.

What Clinical Trials Have Been Conducted on the MonaLisa Touch?

A multisite study was conducted by Dr. Mickey Karram, Director of Fellowship Program on Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery at The Christ Hospital, Cincinnati, OH and Dr. Eric Sokol, Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Stanford University Medical Center.

The trial assessed the use of CO2 fractional laser therapy on 30 women with vaginal health issues due to natural or induced menopause. All of the patients in the trial were treated with the MonaLisa Touch laser therapy. Results were:

  • Overwhelmingly positive and immediate results
  • Highly statistically significant improvement in symptoms after first treatment
  • Escalation of progress with each subsequent treatment

*Women in the study either experienced natural menopause or induced menopause as the result of hysterectomy or drug-induced suppression of ovarian function (chemotherapy, radiations, and anticancer drugs such as Tamoxifen).
A study was done by Dr. Stefano Salvatore*, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Vita- Salute San Raffaele University to assess the feasibility of fractional C02 laser in the treatment of 50 women suffering changes in their gynecologic health.
*42 patients (84%) showed significant improvement in their physical and mental quality of life scores over baseline and were satisfied with the treatment.

In addition to the multisite study, there are currently 8 published studies with 6 ongoing studies.

Does The Procedure Hurt?

The procedure is painless – requires no anesthesia. Some patients may experience some discomfort the first time the probe is inserted, but the actual treatment is not painful. Many patients report that it feels like a gentle vibration.

How Long Does It Take?

Patients receive three treatments, spaced six weeks apart, which each take less than five minutes to perform.

When Will I See Results?

Most patients feel improvement after the very first treatment, although the procedure calls for three treatments that are generally spaced over a 12-week period.

How Long Does It Last?

Patients should expect to come back annually for a maintenance treatment.

*Dr. Reidy will determine with you if follow up treatments are required.

Will The Procedure Be Covered By Insurance?

At this time, the MonaLisa Touch procedure is not covered by most insurance plans. Therefore, cash payment would be required in order to receive this procedure.

A Note About the Recent FDA Letter to Manufacturers of Vaginal Therapy Devices

As some of you may have read or seen, the FDA recently sent letters to eight manufacturers of various vaginal therapy devices, including the manufacturer of MonaLisa Touch, voicing concerns about the safety and efficacy of these procedures. Although media reports indicate the FDA issued a blanket, sweeping, identical letter to all the manufacturers (even though the devices have different technologies and have different data, safety and efficacy profiles), this is not the case. In fact the letter received by the manufacturer of MonaLisa Touch did NOT question the safety of the device. It had concerns about some of the claims on their website and whether existing FDA clearance adequately included those claims.

The FDA cleared MonaLisa Touch for use in gynecologic applications on September 5, 2014 and since that time MonaLisa Touch has helped countless women across the United States enjoy intimacy again.

We at W4W are encouraged that the FDA is looking into the many devices that do not deliver on their promises and have scant data behind them. There has been a proliferation of devices recently, many of which are being marketed to medi-spas and other non-obgyn settings. We feel that any procedure done involving vaginal health should be done by a qualified pelvic surgeon, such as an obgyn, urogynecologist, or urologist. That is one reason why we chose the MonaLisa Touch device. It is sold only to these professionals. MonaLisa Touch is backed by 34 clinical trials, involving major medical centers both in the U.S. and abroad, with findings presented at the national meetings of the associations of obgyns and urologists, showing excellent benefits and safety. The FDA and the media in general clearly have not kept up with the recent data. Many articles on the web also reference a statement from ACOG from 2007, long before MonaLisa Touch even existed, referring to vaginal rejuvenation surgeries as not being useful for patients. This clearly has no application whatsoever to the current technology. When performed by a qualified surgeon, such as Dr. Reidy, MonaLisa Touch is a safe, effective treatment for vaginal dryness and other symptoms of menopause.
